For those who deal with Seasonal Depression….
Now is the time to get proactive. Don’t wait until you are deep in those feelings to try to get out of them. It may be too late or too hard to get out of the funk by then. Think about the things that brought joy during the months you felt your best. Then do the following:
1. ✨Try to implement the things you that bring you joy throughout Fall and Winter.
We like to do all the things we love in the summer because days are longer and the weather is nice. But don’t stop just because the seasons are changing. You like vacationing? Plan a trip during the Fall or Winter months. You like hitting up rooftop bars? Well maybe you can try to find new locations to hang out. Think outside the box and continue to do the things you enjoy in new and fun ways.
2. ✨Stay in touch with friends and family that make you feel your best.
This is the time to stay connected with those who make you happy. Try to be intentional about scheduling AND adhering to the planned time with friends and family. PLEASE NOTE: make sure these are people you ENJOY being around. We all know all know those family members who stress us out, so deal with them at a level that is strictly necessary during this time.
3. ✨Eat nutritious foods and drink plenty of water.
The foods we eat can directly impact our mood. I encourage you to consume fruits, vegetables, and whole grains. These foods provide the nutrients, antioxidants, and mood-boosting vitamins that can help combat Seasonal Depression. Try oranges, carrots, and sweet potatoes for natural Vitamin C. 4. ✨Start or continue a workout regimen.
Movement is medicine. It has been proven that exercising can release “feel-good” hormones called endorphins. This is the hormone that you need more of during this season. Join a local fitness class, a running group, or hop on YouTube for some free workouts. Whatever you do, keep moving!
5. ✨Journal, pray, and/or meditate. (Whatever floats your boat)
Getting your thoughts and feelings out of your mind is a great way to combat Seasonal Depression. Try to write down three things you are grateful for. This can help to keep your perspective in check. Remember to pray for the people in your life and for the three things that you are grateful for on a daily basis. These positive reminders also help release more “feel-good” endorphins.
6. ✨DO NOT GIVE UP ON YOURSELF
Now is not the time to put yourself to the wayside. This is the time to be intentional about your self-love and self-care. You want to give yourself the things you need, especially during this time, so that you can continue to thrive and live your best life. You have loved ones counting on you and watching this behavior. Make sure you set an example that you want them to follow.
